Title: Forum requests
Post by: Jan on October 09, 2009, 12:35:44 PM
I would like to request a couple of sub-forums.

A gear for sale forum and a free-cycle forum.

Regarding the free-cycle forum I know that I and several other folks around here have older computer parts and cabling that I would happily kick down to someone for the cost of shipping (I have a volume discounted commercial UPS account at work).

It could be both "wanted" and "have to offer".

I imagine it could be inclusive of just about anything not prohibitive to ship.

Whadda ya think?

I've got boxes of crap. I haven't looked through in years.  ???

Some things that come to mind are a few 100 Mb network cards, older, smaller HDs, fans, all manner of IDE, SCSI, cat 5 cabling, modems, older ram, MBs, PIII class processors, etc.

I can't imagine anyone's going to build their next DAW with any of it. I imagine the demographic being more the people who wanna build their toddlers a computer they can shove peanut butter in or enthusiasts who wanna build their own linux firewall or home automation controller.

I've got a few 20' XLR and 1/4" instrument cables I'd like to see not end up in a landfill. I may see if I can throw in a crockpot to sweeten the deal.  ;D

It wouldn't make much sense to spend $20 shipping a $15 cable to the UK, but you get the picture.

Great idea!
Recyling stuff for use by others is brilliant.
Mmmmmm... crockpot....
I am in Australia though so they would have to be bloody good XLRs lol.
I have lotsa stuff here too, we need to have a garage sale here badly....
Ill have a nose through the stuff.....

Cheers,
Mark.

Today I wrote "I get lost here constantly", and can't remember which section it was in.

Well, see if someone will swap you something of value for the excess forums!

In terms of the subcatagories of discussion, I agree wholeheartedly.

I do think a "gear for sale" forum should be it's own forum though, if Jeff is interested.

I'm open to whatever forum layout you guys want .. doesn't take but a few minutes to re-arrange them.

How about "general", "Songs"and "Help"? Seemed to work before.

I would like the media break outs .. that's kind of what I had in mind for the
concentration of the forum .. maybe branching into video and photography at
some point. But, I can certainly collapse the discussion forums down if you
wish.

Where is the 'Technique' forum? I have a major issue with recording drums and guitar speakers and haven't figured out where to put those questions yet.

Just start a thread in the "Music" section. I don't think we need dozens of sections.

A humble +1 from me too on collapsing the structure a bit.

"iPhone vs. Palm Pre" in "What's on your mind"
"snow" in What's All This Then?
"Mr.Grohl and Co." latest tune in Internet

It gets confusing. I get lost, forget which board a particular thread resides/belongs in.

Three categories, that's all we need. Music, Not-Music, and Not-Not-Music.

Can I suggest that we need a *main* area again...a general discussion.  I'm visiting a little more often and have no idea where I should be going when I first get here.  Things just seem disjointed and spread about over 20 different subcategories.

Yeah, I think it's time to re-assess the categories.

I usually start with "what's on your mind". It's the 'general discussion' area.

My 2 cents:

Forum FAQ and secret as is - limited to Forum announcements and access type stuff - should probably not be very active - more info than comments.

Media:
Songs: (Maybe move this as a subforum to Music?)
Life:
Formula 1:

So that would be two music forums, then.
